Two petrol engines are offered for the car, with enough power for any road situation. The starting engine is a 147-horsepower 1.8-litre unit with a peak torque of 180 Nm. Both a six-speed manual and a continuously variable transmission are available. In the second of the three possible trims, Sol+, as well as in the top-end Elegant version, the variator can be controlled via steering wheel-mounted switches.

The other engine, a two-litre engine with 152 hp, is available only for the top-end Toyota Avensis. Unlike the first powerplant, it is available only in conjunction with a variator. This unit has a higher maximum torque (196 Nm) and better acceleration dynamics. The two-litre Toyota Avensis accelerates to one hundred kilometres per hour in 10 seconds.
