The Sienna’s powertrain is a hybrid of a 2.5-liter atmospheric engine and two electric motors, producing 248 horsepower. The engine is paired to an eCVT variator. A low capacity NiMH battery allows the Sienna to run on pure electric power for short distances. For a surcharge, the Sienna relies on an electric motor on the rear axle, which is responsible for driving the rear wheels.

The use of the TNGA platform has also had a direct impact on the safety equipment. Pedestrian and cyclist recognition with emergency braking, dynamic cruise control and lane-keeping systems, a traffic sign reading system, blind spot monitoring sensors and a warning system for reversing are available for the minivan. A rearview camera is standard, and all-around cameras are available for an additional charge. Ten airbags are also included as standard equipment.
